I just opened my small business. Do I need online booking right away?

Short answer

A new small business may not need online booking right away. Phone calls, messages, or a simple form can carry bookings while you learn how your business runs, and many booking apps charge a monthly subscription before your first booking arrives. A small tool built around how you already work is a lighter first step, and you can move to a bigger app or extend it later.

The situation

You’ve just opened. The business is real, but you’re still working out who your customers are, how they like to book, and which parts of the day take the most time.

Then someone tells you, “You need online booking.” So you look, and most of the good-looking options come with a monthly subscription. You’d be paying every month before the first booking comes in, for a long list of features you haven’t had a reason to use yet.

Your options

1. Start with what you already have. A phone number, direct messages, or a simple form can carry bookings in the early days. It’s not glamorous, but it costs almost nothing and shows you how your customers really book.

2. Go straight to a full booking app. Sometimes this is the right call, especially if you already have steady demand, take payments, or manage staff schedules. A mature platform handles those well, and building them yourself isn’t worth it. If that’s you, I’ll say so.

3. Start with a small tool built around your routine. If the form or inbox is starting to slow you down, one small piece, like a page that shows the week’s bookings in order, may be enough. It does only what you need now, and it’s a one-time build fee rather than a monthly subscription to me. Some projects still have their own costs, like hosting or a domain, and I’ll tell you about those before any work begins.

What I’d recommend

Start small, and let the business show you what it needs. You don’t have to decide the whole setup on day one, because you’re still learning what your business needs.

When it grows, you have two paths. You can move to a bigger booking app, or I can extend what you already have. Starting small doesn’t lock you in either way.

You don’t have to buy the whole platform to start taking bookings. Start with what you need, and add more when you need it.

If you’ve just opened and aren’t sure what you need yet, I’m happy to hear how you take bookings today and tell you honestly whether a small tool would help, or whether you’re fine as you are.
